How it Works

  1. Verify the signer’s identity: The notary will request a valid government-issued photo ID to verify the signer’s identity.
  2. Confirm the signer’s willingness to sign: The notary will ensure that the signer is signing the document of their own free will and not under duress or coercion.
  3. Administer an oath or affirmation: If required, the notary will administer an oath or affirmation to the signer, affirming that the information in the document is true and correct.
  4. Notarize the document: The notary will sign and stamp it with their official seal to certify that they notarized it.
  5. Record the notarization: The notary will record the notarization, including the date, type of document, and the signer’s identity, in a notary journal as required by law.
  6. Provide a copy of the notarized document: The notary may provide the signer with a copy for their records.

It’s important to note that the specific steps may vary slightly depending on the type of document being notarized.

What is a Notary Public?

A notary is a state-appointed official authorized to witness and certify the signing of important legal documents. Their primary function is to prevent fraud by verifying the signer’s identity and ensuring that they are signing the document of their own free will and with a complete understanding of its contents.

How much does it cost to have a document notarized?
